Характеризуя переводческую деятельность на Руси от периода становления государственности до XVII века, следует сказать, что переводчики пытались максимально приблизить читателя к оригиналу, либо наоборот, оригинал адаптировать к вкусам и понятиям потенциального читателя. При этом переводчики фактически смотрели на текст как на свою собственность. Они могли менять по своему усмотрению, даже содержание оригинала. Общераспространенной практикой было было дополнение оригиналов вставками из других тематически близких сочинений , собственными пояснениями. Сам же переводчик остается безымянным на всем протяжении средневековой истории русского перевода.
