Особенности объектов учёта в некоторых организациях обусловливают применение различных бухгалтерских счетов и, соответственно, различных планов счетов. Различают следующие планы счетов:

план счетов бухгалтерского учёта финансово-хозяйственной деятельности организаций (общий);
план счетов бухгалтерского учёта в кредитных организациях;
план счетов бюджетного учёта.
