Московский государственный университет имени М. В. Ломоносова — ведущий, один из старейших и крупнейших классических университетов России, один из центров отечественной науки икультуры. C 1940 года носит имя Михаила Ломоносова, полное наименование — Федеральное государственное бюджетное образовательное учреждение высшего образования «Московский государственный университет имени М. В. Ломоносова», широко используется аббревиатура «МГУ».

МГУ включает в себя 15 научно-исследовательских институтов, 41факультет, более 300 кафедр и 6 филиалов (в их числе пять зарубежных — все в странах СНГ)[11]. В университете обучается около 35 тысяч студентов по программам бакалавриата,5 тысяч аспирантов, 10 тысяч слушателей подготовительных отделений, в общей сложности около 50 тысяч человек. На факультетах и в научно-исследовательских центрах работают 4 тысячи профессоров ипреподавателей, около 5 тысяч научных сотрудников. Обслуживающий персонал насчитывает примерно 15 тысяч человек. С 1992 года ректором МГУ является академик-математикВиктор Антонович Садовничий.
Университет имеет в своём распоряжении более 600 зданий и сооружений, включая Главное здание на Воробьёвых горах. Их общая площадь около 1 млн м²
