Just like the gambling or drug addiction, procrastination is a self-destructive behaviour. It can seriously affect your finances. 40 percent of procrastinators have experienced a financial loss because of their habit. The research carried out by H & R Block shows that doing their tax statements, but at the last moment costs U.S. citizens an average of $ 400. In 2002 Americans overpaid $ 473 million in taxes as a result of rushing and consequent errors.Steel analysed over 200 procrastination studies and came up with the theory that dillydallying boils down to four elements: the person's confidence, the value of the job (its importance but also its unpleasantness), the person's tendency to be delayed by distractions and impulsiveness (how susceptible he or she is to immediate rewards). So if you expect to do well at a job, and it is a pleasant thing to do, and you are not prone to being distracted, and it has to be done right away, you are not going to procrastinate. On the other hand, if you face a difficult, unpleasant task you expect to fail at, and you are easily distracted, and the task does not have to be done for quite awhile, you are likely to dawdle.Steel's research contradicts some conventional ideas about the habit, e.g. the one that says that procrastinators suffer form anxiety and so have a harder time facing a difficult task. Also, he believes we are wrong thinking that procrastinators are perfectionists, who care so much about doing it right that they can't bear to get started.Although procrastination is as old as humans are, it is probably an even bigger problem in our contemporary society, which offers a whole range of distractions, including television, video games and the Internet. Additionally, many jobs are becoming self-structured, which means it is increasingly up to us to impose our own goals and deadlines. Can we do anything to overcome procrastination? There is one simple solution: you just have to get started. The anticipation of the task often is far worse than the task itself.
