Астрономы обнаружили на новых снимках Плутона детали ландшафта, напоминающие собой земные дюны.

Такие объекты могли образоваться благодаря деятельности ветров, но атмосфера планетоида слишком тонкая и разреженная. Новые фотографии были переданы космическим аппаратом New Horizons в период с 5 по 11 сентября, с началом фазы активной передачи данных.

На снимках отчетливо видны различные ландшафты, наблюдавшиеся ранее учеными — темные древние области, покрытые кратерами, азотные «ледники», просачивающиеся сквозь горные хребты на равнины и сети долин, которые могли образоваться из-за течения различных веществ по поверхности Плутона.

Отдельное внимание привлекают сети параллельных темных борозд на одном из снимков. По словам ученых, они напоминают собой дюны, образующиеся под влиянием ветров на Земле. Если эти объекты на самом деле окажутся дюнами, то это означало бы, что-либо у Плутона раньше была более плотная атмосфера, либо что за это ответственны какие-либо процессы, о которых ученые еще не догадываются.

Разрешение новых фотографий составляет около 400 метров на пиксель, что позволяет увидеть объекты размером всего в 0,8 километра. Они охватывают площадь планетоида в два с половиной раза большую, чем июльские фотографии. Снимки были получены 14 июля, во время пролета космического аппарата мимо планетоида. Расстояние до небесного тела при этом составляло 50 тысяч километров, в восемь раз меньше, чем расстояние от Земли до Луны.
