Действие картины разворачивается в Японии и показывает всю сложность взаимоотношений Запада и Востока. Главная героиня фильма Амели родилась в Японии, но в возрасте пяти лет вынуждена была переехать с родителями в Бельгию. Однако, тоска по утерянной родине не потеряла своей актуальности и двадцать лет спустя. Амели устраивается в крупную японскую корпорацию переводчиком. Она восхищается своей красивой, умной и грациозной начальницей Фубуки, которая является воплощением японской женщины. Амели усердно работает, стараясь быть похожей на Фубуки, но она еще не понимает, как велика пропасть между восточным и западным мировосприятием. В скором времени Амели разочаровывается как в своей работе, так и в японцах в целом. Женщина оказывается в обществе женоненавистников, где считаются в порядке вещей оскорбления служащих.
