In Russia in Sevastopol is "Monument to the scuttled ships." It was built in 1905. It is the emblem of the city, set near the Seaside Boulevard near the area Nakhimov.
Sevastopol bay and navy - are inseparable concepts. City throughout the history of its existence proved loyalty, devotion and love for the sea and ships. But once the sailors had to sacrifice the most expensive they had. For the sake of the city the military destroyed the ships that were deliberately shot by their own guns and flooded in the wake of the bay, thus creating a barrier in the path of enemy ships. The city was saved. In honor of this event, the residents erected a monument. Since then, a monument to the scuttled ships has become a kind of calling card of Sevastopol. During Soviet times the monument was the image on the emblem of the city. In 2000, it appeared on the flag of Sevastopol.
In order to save the city from enemy invasion from the sea, it was decided to block the path of warships. To do this, in the wake of the sailors flooded first seven of failed sailboats. After severe storms that raged on the sea and in the bay in autumn and winter 1854, the barrier of sailing ships had again strengthened. To do this, here it was later flooded three more merchant vessel. Ten sunken sailboats were the first line of defense. In February 1855 a decision was made about the sinking of a further six vessels, which have created a second line of defense. In August this year, the remaining ships of the fleet were flooded. According to the historians, just to the bottom of the bay was sent 75 warships and 16 support.
