В 1918-м году декретом об отделении церкви от страны и школы от церкви введён новый принцип образования (светское образование). В первый раз в летописи России был введён принцип общего неприменного безвозмездного образования. Для ликвидации безграмотности (именуемой ликбез) большей доли населения (более 70 процентов безграмотных на начало века в среднем по государству) впредь до 30-х годов в системе образования СССР функционировали специализированные школы.

В Союзе была сотворена система общеобразовательных школ, рассчитанная на всё население страны. Были как средние общеобразовательные школы, так и школы для работающей молодёжи (в том числе вечерние школы).

В школах были Ленинские комнаты, основные ячейки ребяческих и молодёжных организаций: октябрятские звёздочки для младших классов, пионерские отряды для средних классов и комсомольские организации в старших классах. Одинаковой для всех была стандартная школьная форма - как для мальчиков, так и для девочек.

У нас в стране считается, что русская школа в эти времена представлялась наилучшей в мире.
