В 10-летнем возрасте Николай Зелинский поступил в Тираспольское уездное училище на двухгодичные курсы для подготовки к поступлению в гимназию. Досрочно закончив их в 11-летнем возрасте, Николай поступил в Одесскую классическую Ришельевскую гимназию, во второй класс.

По окончании гимназии в 1880 году, Зелинский поступил в Новороссийский университет на естественное отделение физико-математического факультета. В 1884 окончил Новороссийский университет (Одесса), в 1888 выдержал магистерский экзамен, там же защитил магистерскую (1889) и докторскую (1891) диссертации. В 1893—1953 профессор Московского университета], кроме периода 1911—1917, когда он покинул университет вместе с группой учёных в знак протеста против политики царского министра народного просвещения Л. А. Кассо (в эти годы Зелинский был в Петербурге директором Центральной лаборатории министерства финансов и заведующим кафедрой в Политехническом институте).
