В Литве первая ветровая станция была построена в 1991 г., однако по технологическим причинам она долго не проработала. Поэтому сложилось мнение, что литовским ветрякам не хватает силы ветра. Тем не менее, проведённые исследования показали, что у морской береговой зоны Литвы достаточный ветровой потенциал (скорость ветра там достигает 6,4 м/с).
В Национальной стратегии развития возобновляемых источников энергии предусмотрено, что в 2020 г. общая мощность ветровых станций должна составить 500 МВт.. По данным литовской электроэнергетической компании LitGRID, сегодня выданы разрешения на присоединение к электрораспределительной системе дополнительных ветряков, общая мощность которых составит 595 МВт.
Из-за технологических ограничений распределительных систем, возможного негативного воздействия на окружающую среду и сопротивления со стороны жителей дальнейшее развитие ветровой энергетики в Литве после достижения показателя в 500 МВт потребует принятия новых законов.
