Крашенинников входил в группу ведущих учёных
Академии наук, разделявших взгляды М. В.
Ломоносова на её задачи и способствовавших
созданию русской национальной науки и культуры.
В 1749 году он был избран в состав комиссии по
рассмотрению скандально знаменитой
«диссертации» академика Г. Ф. Миллера «О начале
и происхождении имени российского народа». В
ходе работы комиссии Степан Петрович вместе с
Ломоносовым, Тредиаковским и Н. И. Поповым
активно выступал против теории о нордическом
происхождении названия русского государства.
