Отто Лиденброк, проживающий в Гамбурге. Обнаруживает зашифрованное сообщение исландского алхимика Арне Сакнуссемма, жившего в XVI веке. Акселю удаётся расшифровать документ. Профессор Линденброк, решает отправиться к центру Земли, а Аксель должен его сопровождать. Остановившись в Дании для отдыха, они перебираются в Исландию. Им удаётся проникнуть в глубину Земли. Они обнаруживают остатки доисторических людей. Там же наши герои находят следы Сакнуссеммса и вход в другую пещеру. Они оказываются сначала на воде, затем на лаве вулкана острова Стромболи недалеко от Сицилии. Через кратер они выбираются на поверхность.
