Развитие французского искусства середины XIX века связано преимущественно с жанром и пейзажем, прежде всего с именами Коро и живописцев барбизонской школы. Это направление обязано своим названием деревне Барбизон, расположенной неподалеку от Парижа, на окраине лесов Фонтенбло. На развитие пейзажной живописи Коро и барбизoнцев большое влияние оказали "малые голландцы" и констебль. В то же время она была естественным продолжением никогда, в сущности не прерывавшейся линии развития французского пейзажа (Пуссен, Лоррен, Ватто Фрагонар, Робер.)
