OUR FUTURE PROFESSION

Every year many young people who really care for medicine enter medical universities and academies. They become students. They study numerous theoretical and special subjects. They have practical training during which they do the work of nurses and doctors assistants. Such a course of studies helps them to gain much knowledge of medicine, which will give them the possibility to diagnose different diseases and treat people.

But medical students must remember that it is not easy to be a good doctor.Ta become a good doctor students must have not only deep knowledge in a particular field of medicine such as surgery or therapy. A doctor must be able to get on with different kinds of peoplev He must be quiet, understanding sympathetic and possess self control. If his patient is nervous or frightened a doctor should always be ready to explain things and to reassure him. But a doctor should never lose his temper. He must love people and have a kind heart. He must give all his knowledge, all his talent, and all his time to people, to the protection of their health.

Medical students must understand well all the difficulties of their future profession. They must be aware of all its merits and drawbacks. They must remember that often it will be difficult to diagnose a disease, sometimes it will be even more difficult to cure it. The diagnosing and treatment of many problem cases can be difficult and challenging. But a good doctor will always do his best to gain his patient’s confidence. And the confidence of a patient in his doctor is a “valuable remedy”.

Did you hear about Hippocrates Oath before you entered the University? What does it read? It reads, “1 shall enter any house for the good of the patient. I shall do the best for the benefit of the sick. I shall not do my patient any harm” -these are the words from Hippocrates Oath. And they must be not only words for medical students. They must become the motto of their life. A true doctor must observe the principles of medical ethics -the code of behavior and practice, followed by the Greek physician Hippocrates, called the “Father of medicine”. According to this code any practicing physician shall give competent health care with compassion and respect for the sick. In his practice he must keep medical secrets, he must be honest and responsible to his patients, to the society, to his profession and to himself.

A modern physician is one of the most highly trained of all professional men. To be up to date he must continue to study, applying scientific knowledge.

Medical students must remember that to treat patients is a great art but not

an ordinary trade. It is one of the professions which requires a real calling for it.
