Numerous famous writers, artists and intellectuals have made Bloomsbury their home. Commemorating their presence are scores of blue plaques. One of many pointers to London’s varied past are the blue plaques slapped on sundry sites to commemorate famous people, events and buildings. There are plenty in Bloomsbury, but they are strewn all across London. Almost 900 have appeared on the former homes of the famous and the long dead, and about 20 new ones are added each year. The first plaque was erected by the Royal Society of Arts in memory of the poet Lord Byron in 1867. In 1901 the London County Council took over the service, which is today administered by English Heritage.Bona fide plaques are ceramic with white lettering on a circular blue base. They are bald statements of fact, giving little biographical information – simply the name, dates, profession and usually the period he or she lived in the building.
