Город Ташкент расположен в зоне сейсмической активности Тянь-Шаньской горной системы, под городом в земной коре проходит Каржантаусский тектонический разлом.
26 апреля 1966 года ранним утром в 5 часов 24 минуты в столице Узбекистана произошло землетрясение силой в эпицентре 8,3 балла. Эпицентр землетрясения находился примерно в десяти километрах вглубь под центральными районами города. Больше двух миллионов квадратных метров жилой площади было разрушено, без крыши над головой остались 78 тысяч семей. На помощь в восстановлении Ташкента пришли все республики бывшего Советского Союза.
На месте эпицентра землетрясения построен Мемориальный комплекс "Мужество".
