Each country has its own holidays. They reflect the history of the country and its cultural and religious traditions. Some religious holidays are common in many countries. They are Christmas and Easter.
Americans celebrate Christmas on December 25. They buy a lot of gifts for each other, their parents, children and friends.
In the new year, January 1 is not so widely celebrated in the United States, as we do in Russia. Of course the most important holiday in the United States - July 4, the Independence Day. People love to watch colorful fireworks in the evening. July 4th is a day off, and people do not go to work.
Holidays, when people do not go to work are: Martin Luther King Day January 20 Labor Day September 7 and thanksgiving on the last Friday of November. On Thanksgiving Day, Americans usually eat Turkey. This feast recalls the time when the first colonists (pilgrims) from England, came to America in 1620, and can survive in unknown lands. There is a still a big white rock on the shore in Plymouth, Massachusetts, that the Pilgrims landed on. This is called "Plymouth Rock."
October 31 is the most beloved children's ... holiday, Halloween. On this day children dressed in
funny dresses to visit their neighbors and say "Trick or Treat!" And get the sweets.
The rest of the holidays are usually on weekends. They are: flag day, Mother's Day, Armed Forces Day. Americans celebrate the birthday of Lincoln, Washington's birthday, the day of the president in February.
February 14 - Valentine's Day, or as it is called "Valentine's Day".
