Правление Иоанна началось с войны против Франции.
В 1213 г. в Лондоне состоялось большое собрание баронов, на котором Стефан Лангтон огласил якобы случайно найденную им старую грамоту времен Генриха I, дававшую определенные свободы баронам. Год спустя Иоанн с войском, состоявшим из наемников, потерпел поражение во Франции, потеряв остатки своих владений во Франции. Вернувшись домой, он потребовал от баронов денежную компенсацию за отказ участвовать в походе. Бароны в ответ напомнили ему про обещание восстановить старые законы и про найденную грамоту Генриха I.
