Начиная с последних лет прошлого столетия, в исторической науке происходит определенная переориентация. Под вопросом оказались те предпосылки, на которых покоилось историческое исследование с воз-- никновения истории как научной дисциплины. Многие ученые начали понимать и писать историю по-другому. Этот поворот связан с фунда­ментальными изменениями условий самого человеческого существова­ния. Уже со времен Ницше пошатнулась вера в историю как в разумный и наполненный смыслом процесс, в ходе которого овладение силами природы и прогресс научного знания ведут к благосостоянию человече­ства. Однако XX в. с его разрушительными мировыми войнами, тотали­тарными режимами, уничтожением окружающей среды показал проти­воречивость прогресса, в ходе которого наука и техника стали средством не только освобождения, но и порабощения человека. Прогресс знания вел к мысли о том, что история приближается к своему концу.
