Живые организм представлены огромным разнообразием на Земле. Это разнообразие формировалось в течение более 4 млрд. лет. Сейчас оно сокращается ускоренными темпами. Влияние человеческого общества на биосферу постоянно нарастает. (Существование же людей на планете напрямую зависит от обеспеченности их различными продовольственными ресурсами, что в свою очередь связано с видовым разнообразием в биосфере.)
Основными причинами сокращения биологического разнообразия являются:
- разрушение естественных экосистем в результате вырубки лесов, расширения пахотных и пастбищных площадей, строительства городов, прокладки дорог, каналов, других коммуникаций;
- рост населения планеты и развитие его хозяйственной деятельности; загрязнение атмосферы производственными выбросами;
- применение ядохимикатов в сельском хозяйстве, вызывающее гибель насекомых, птиц, рыб, некоторых видов животных.
Сейчас темпы исчезновения отдельных видов в 50— 100 раз превышают естественный показатель. Примерно четверти всех видов животных и растений планеты угрожает исчезновение в ближайшие 20—30 лет. В книгу внесены 14 млн. видов животных и растений,

Ежегодно гибнет более 11 млн. га леса. Значительная часть территории, на которой ранее росли леса, превращается в сельскохозяйственные земли низкого качества, которые не могут прокормить живущих на этих землях людей.
Для сохранения (биологического) разнообразия необходимо обеспечить:
- сохранение лесов;
- охрану водной и воздушной среды;
- защиту нетронутого еще человеком биологического богатства.
Для сохранения флоры и фауны создаются заповедники.

К таким центрам относятся озеро Байкал и Прибайкалье, юг Дальнего Востока, кавказский регион.
В рамках Программы защиты окружающей среды при ООН разработана Концепция о биоразнообразии. Цель данной концепции — информировать и убедить мировую общественность в том, что уничтожение биоресурсов угрожает самому существованию человека на Земле.
Я считаю,что люди должны думать не только о себе,но и об окружающей мире.
