Живые организмы, обитающие на Земле, представлены огромным разнообразием. Это разнообразие складывалось в течение длительного периода эволюции, формировалось в течение более 4 млрд. лет. Сейчас оно сокращается ускоренными темпами. Влияние человеческого общества на биосферу постоянно нарастает. Существование же людей на планете напрямую зависит от обеспеченности их различными продовольственными ресурсами, что в свою очередь связано с видовым разнообразием в биосфере.
Основными причинами сокращения биологического разнообразия являются:
- разрушение естественных экосистем в результате вырубки лесов, расширения пахотных и пастбищных площадей, строительства городов, прокладки дорог, каналов, других коммуникаций;
- рост населения планеты и развитие его хозяйственной деятельности; загрязнение атмосферы производственными выбросами;
- применение ядохимикатов в сельском хозяйстве, вызывающее гибель насекомых, птиц, рыб, некоторых видов животных.
Сейчас темпы исчезновения отдельных биологических видов в 50— 100 раз превышают естественный показатель. Примерно четверти всех биологических видов животных и растений планеты угрожает исчезновение в ближайшие 20—30 лет. В каталоги внесены 14 млн. видов животных и растений, исчезнувших к настоящему времени.

The main causes of loss of biological diversity are: -destruction of natural ecosystems as a result of deforestation, the expansion of arable and grazing areas, construction of cities, roads, canals, and other communications; -world population growth and the development of its business activities; industrial pollution emissions; -the use of pesticides in agriculture, causing the deaths of insects, birds, fish, some species of animals. Now the pace of species extinction in 50-100 times the natural rate. About a quarter of all animal and plant species on the planet is threatened by extinction in the next 20-30 years.
