Матиас Руст покинул хельсинский аэродром «Мальами» днем 28 мая. Конечной целью полета спортивного самолета американского производства «Цесна» был обозначен Стокгольм. Финский обслуживающий персонал недоумевал: до Швеции не больше полутора часов, а баки самолета заправлены под завязку, да еще и дополнительные установлены в салоне. Матиас, конечно, и не собирался в шведскую столицу. Его целью была «златоглавая», но в тот момент об этом никто и подумать не мог, поэтому вылет разрешили.
