Образование в США обязательное с 6 до 14-16 лет, зависимо от штата. В шестилетнем возрасте дети идут в первый класс, а со второго начинается начальная школа, которая заканчивается в шестом классе у в возрасте 11-12 лет. Средняя школа начинается с седьмого класса (возраст детей - 12 лет) и может называться старшей средней школой ( до 12 класса, возраст детей - 17 лет) или делится на младшую среднюю школу ( 7-9 классы) и старшую среднюю школу (10-12 классы). В старшей школе ученики выбирают одну из трех по которой они будут учится.
