На огромном полотне изображены горожане, собравшиеся в парке на острове Гранд-Жатт, на реке Сене. Разношерстная публика прогуливается по пляжу, отдыхает, катается на лодках, ловит рыбу и так далее. В целом картина передает ощущение сонной атмосферы летнего дня. Написанию картины предшествовало множество рисунков с натуры и живописных эскизов, запечатлевших поиски моделей и пейзажа. Главное отличие этой картины от «Купания в Аньере» было в изменившейся манере письма. В этой работе художник впервые использовал разработанный им новый художественный метод, основанный на законах спектрального анализа. Сёра отказался от смешения красок и использовал точечные мазки чистого цвета, располагая их рядом друг с другом. Эту технику часто называют пуантилизмом, но сам автор и его последователи предпочитали термин «дивизионизм». Написанная мелкими мазками, картина словно выткана из огромного количества оттенков. Все фигуры расположены лицом к зрителю или в профиль. Позы скованны, лица не видны, однако бросаются в глаза детали: обезьянка, собачки, зонтики, трости, трубка и сигара. Застывший, словно по мановению волшебной палочки, пейзаж окутан странным, нереальным воздухом.
