После войны эта тема стала набирать обороты дальше. В июле 1950 года прошёл первый поезд по линии широкой колеи от Норильска до Кайеркана. 22 ноября 1952 года в Норильск прибыл по широкой колее первый состав из Дудинки. Прошло ещё два года и про узкоколейку совсем забыли.
Изначально были и такие планы, чтоб Норильскую железную дорога связать с Трансполярной железной дорогой, которую строили с 1948 года. Она должна была связать енисейский порт Игарка («стройки № 501 и № 503» Главного управления лагерного железнодорожного строительства) с основной железнодорожной сетью. Таким бы образом наша Норильская стала бы не изолированной. В расчёте на бешенный трафик и был построен такой большой железнодорожный вокзал Норильск-Сортировочный. Но после смерти Сталина от таких подвигов было решено отказаться.
