Это рассказ о Саймоне который столкнулся с мучительным решением: сохранить свою жизнь, бросив своего друга на верную смерть, или попытаться спасти друга, но наверняка умереть.
Рассказ начинается с того что британские альпинисты Джо Симпсон и Саймон Йейтс намеревались подняться на Суила Гранде. Действия происходят в перуанских Андах.

События, представленные в рассказе, разворачиваются следующим образом Джо и Саймон выбирают самый трудный путь для подъёма в горы. Они легко достигают вершины. Для спуска они выбрали легкий путь. Но Джо поскользнулся и сломал ногу. Он был не в силах идти дальше. Саймон решил спустить раненного друга используя веревку. Автор описывает спуск: сначала все шло хорошо. Но потом, после очередного спуска, Саймон не получил сигнала от Джо и начал беспокоиться. Он опустил своего друга над краем выступа ледника. Саймон держал веревку больше часа, пытаясь удержать вес Джо. Но его сила становилась все слабее и слабее, и он понял что может умереть. Саймон принял болезненное решение чтобы спасти свою жизнь. Он взял нож и перерезал веревку, которая была привязана к его другу.

Далее автор переходит к описанию друга Саймона Джо. Чудесным образом Джо не умер после падения. Он был тяжело ранен, близок к смерти, но был жив. И он был полон решимости не умереть. The story starts with the fact that the British mountaineers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the Suila Grande. The action takes place in the Peruvian Andes. The events presented in the story unfold as follows Joe and Simon are choosing the difficult path to ascend into the mountains. They are easy to reach the top. For the descent they chose the easy way out. But Joe slipped and broke his leg. He was unable to go any further. Simon decided to pull the wounded friend using a rope. The author describes the descent: first all went well. But then, after another, Simon has not received a signal from Joe and started to worry. He lowered his friend over the edge of the projection of the glacier. Simon kept the rope for more than an hour, trying to keep the weight of Joe. But his power was becoming weaker and weaker, and he realized that can die. Simon took a painful decision to save his life. He took a knife and cut the rope that was tied to his friend.The author then goes on to describe other Joe Simon. Miraculously Joe died after a fall. He was severely wounded, close to death, but was alive. And he was determined to die. It took four days. Courage and determination saved Joe.
