Действие романа происходит в параллельном мире. Тут равноправно царствуют наука и магия. Этот мир очень похож на наш, но рядом с людьми в нем живут фантастические существа, например, ведьмы и бронированные медведи…
В этом мире душа человека заключена в животном – деймоне. У каждого человека он свой, и когда человек становится взрослым, деймон принимает окончательный облик.
В одном из колледжей Оксфорда вместе со своим деймоном Пантелеймоном живет Лира Белаква - двенадцатилетняя сирота.
Ее дядя – могущественный лорд Азриэл – приезжает в колледж для того, чтобы организовать экспедицию на Север. Цель его поездки – выяснить происхождение загадочной «пыли», которую можно увидеть на фотографиях, снятых в этих местах.
