Education in our country is compulsory and now lasts eleven years. It consists of primary education and secondary education. Primary education starts at the age of six or seven and it for four years. After four years of primary school classes pupils go on tosecondary school, where they study a variety of subjects: Russian,Literature, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English or other foreignlanguages, History, Geography, Biology and PT. There is no uniformnow. Classes last 40 minutes with breaks from 10 to 20 minutes. Asa rule, pupils go to school five days a week. The school year beginsin September and ends in May. It is divided into 4 terms withholidays up to 10 days between them. The summer holidays lastfrom June to September.Most of the schools in Russia are comprehensive, which takepupils of all abilities without entrance exams. But there are alsosome specialized schools, lyceums and gymnasiums, which giveprofound knowledge in various academic subjects. Besides, theyoffer different "elective" subjects, which are not necessary foreverybody. A student chooses the elective part automatically which will be necessaryfor him for his future work or further education at university or145College. In lyceums and gymnasiums classes last 45 minutes andpupils usually study 6 days a week.After classes, pupils don't usually go home right away. They havesome extracurricular activities. Their social and cultural life is wellorganized. Schools have different clubs and societies, and publiccan take part in their work according to their preferences.After finishing the ninth form students must take fourattended. But to enter a university or a college they have tostudy for two more years and take five attended on finishingthe eleventh form
