Верхне-Тазовский государственный природный заповедник был создан в конце XX века в Ямало-Ненецком автономном округе. Его площадь составляет свыше 600 тысяч гектар.

Государственный заповедник занимает Западно-Сибирскую равнину в Красноселькупском районе. Основатели заповедника разделили его на два части - Тазовское и Покольское. С севера заповедник граничит с рекой Таз, с востока – с рекой Ратта, с юга – с Обско-Тазовско-Енисейским водоразделом, с запада – с реками Поколька и Алага.

Территорию заповедника занимают леса и болота. В этом месте обитают более 140 видов птиц, свыше 300 видов сосудистых растений, 35 видов животных и 20 видов рыб. Все эти животные и растения находятся здесь под особой охраной, так как большей частью являются вымирающими видами. К особо ценным относятся: соболь, американская норка, орлан белохвост, пион уклоняющийся.

Климат в этом районе континентальный. Зимы длинные и холодные, а лето, хоть и короткое, но очень солнечное. Теплая погода длится здесь меньше трех месяцев. Поэтому эти места скорее подойдут для тех, кто не любит жару.
