Кто и когда решил, что Иисус Христос родился именно 25 декабря, доподлинно неизвестно – в Библии нет никаких указаний на конкретный день и месяц появления на свет Спасителя. Зато известно, что дату празднования Рождества утвердил своим указом Папа римский Юлий I в 337 году.
Существует версия, что в период раннего христианства Рождество стало заменой ежегодному празднику, посвященному рождению бога солнца Митры и зимнему солнцестоянию. Исходя из того, что практически все религиозные христианские праздники – это, по сути, подмена языческих празднеств, можно сделать вывод, что дату Рождества не вычислили по каким-то древним книгам, а банально «назначили», чтобы облегчить становление новой религии.
Самое же первое документальное упоминание даты Рождества встречается только в середине IV века нашей эры, в римском альманахе, в котором в списке мучеников и епископов первой строкой значится: 25 декабря родился Иисус из Вифлеема Иудейского.
Со временем Рождество обросло традициями и обрядами, многие из которых дошли до наших дней практически в первозданном виде, но кое-что претерпело и существенные изменения. Так, например, ранее не существовало рождественских елей (рождественских деревьев) и традиции дарить подарки.
Потом же в память о дарах волхвов младенцу Иисусу люди начали обмениваться сувенирами, а традиция наряжать рождественское дерево стала симбиозом различных древних культов, отголоски которых сохранились и после окончательного становления христианства. Важную роль в появлении рождественской елки сыграли германские народы. Таким образом праздник приобрел светские черты и перестал быть сугубо религиозным.
Говоря об истории, стоит, пожалуй, упомянуть еще и о том, что до перехода России на новый стиль времяисчисления православные христиане тоже отмечали Рождество 25 декабря, то есть, этот праздник был един для обеих конфессий.
