В 2014 году ЦИК РФ в соответствии с тогдашним законодательством объявил о том, что выборы состоятся 4 декабря 2016 года. Однако, начиная с весны 2015 года рассматривался вопрос о переносе выборов с 4 декабря 2016 года на более ранний срок. Уже в июле были приняты и подписаны Президентом РФ поправки в соответствующий федеральный закон, в результате которых выборы были перенесены на третье воскресенье сентября. Данное решение распространяется не только на Выборы 2016 года, но и на все последующие выборы депутатов Государственной Думы. Во второй раз Государственная дума будет избираться сроком на пять лет.
