Жизнь взаймы" Ремарка начинается с того, что автогонщик Клерфэ приезжает в санаторий для легочных больных, чтобы навестить своего друга и коллегу по гонкам. Во время своего визита Клерфэ встречает женщину Лилиан, больную туберкулезом, которой осталось жить совсем немного. Они проникаются взаимной симпатией и Лилиан покидает санаторий, чтобы успеть посмотреть жизнь и пожить. Они едут в Париж и начинают там вести тот образ жизни, что нравится Лилиан: она шьет наряды, они посещают рестораны, музеи, путешествуют и т.п.. Потихоньку Клерфэ в нее влюбляется и хочет удержать ее любой ценой, а Лилиан стремиться прожить каждый день полновесно, с жадностью. Лилиан пытается получить от жизни, которую она не видела, больше, но не может ни к чему привязаться и мало что ее радует. Клерфэ предлагает ей женитьбу, но не может заинтересовать ее их будущей семейной жизнью, так как у Лилиан нет будущего.
В конце концов Лилиан соглашается выйти замуж за Клерфэ, планируя сбежать от него, пока он будет занят, но ее планам не суждено было сбыться, так как во время одной из гонок Клерфэ попадает в аварию и умирает от полученных травм. Вскоре после этого к Лилиан приезжает Борис Волков, другой пациент легочного санатория, горячо любящий Лилиан, и отвозит ее назад в санаторий, так как Лилиан поняла, что жизнь, которую она пыталась вести вне санатория - чужая, не ее. Спустя 6 недель после возвращения Лилиан умирает.

Смысл романа Эриха Марии Ремарка "Жизнь взаймы", вероятно, заключается в разном отношении к жизни здоровых и больных людей. Там, где один видит скуку, другой видит важность. Где один видит смысл, другой - пустоту. Человек, знающий, что ему отведено немного, пытается хотя бы немного пожить жизнью здоровых людей, но очень часто понимает, что это не его жизнь.

Очень-очень люблю "Триумфальную арку"! Хоть и не самое маленькое произведение по объему, а читается быстро и легко. Пожалуй это произведение и есть самое любимое в его творчестве. А ещё "Три товарища" люблю ещё очень
