В 1918г. в Петрограде были организованы курсы мотористов авиации.
В 1971 году высшее авиационное училище было реорганизовано в Академию гражданской авиации.
11 ноября 2004 года установлен статус университета.

За период своей деятельности Университет подготовил для гражданской авиации более 30 ты. Руководителей и специалистов высшей квалификации.
