Благовещенск основан в 1856 году как Усть-Зейский военный пост. Город расположен на левом берегу Амура, при впадении в него реки Зеи. На противоположном берегу Амура - китайский город Хэйхэ.
Общее развитие города Благовещенск во многом было связано с золотодобывающей промышленностью, сельским хозяйством и водным транспортом. Дальнейшее преобразование города было направлено на усиление его промышленного потенциала, рост числа учебных и научно-исследовательских учреждений.
Благовещенск — один из старейших купеческих городов Дальнего Востока, который и в наши дни выступает в роли посредника в торгово-промышленных связях Сибири и Дальнего Востока с Китаем.
Благовещенск имеет богатое историческое и культурное наследие. В городе имеется театр драмы, кукольный театр, два парка, пять кинотеатров, общественно-культурный центр. В городе создано четыре зоны отдыха оборудованных фонтанами. Амурский Краеведческий музей одно из главных исторических зданий города.
На территории города находится более 80 памятников архитектуры и монументального искусства. Сохранились в городе и образцы оригинальной деревянной застройки XIX века. На набережной реки Амур воздвигнут памятник основателю города генерал-губернатору Восточной Сибири Муравьёву-Амурскому.
В городе действуют три православных храма. Основан мужской монастырь в честь Архистратига Божия Гавриила и прочих Небесных Сил бесплотных. Местная святыня — чудотворная Албазинская икона Божией Матери, именуемая Слово плоть бысть.
