История Казанского собора уходит корнями в наше славное историческое прошлое. Его закладка произошла в 1801 году: именно тогда эскизный проект храма, предложенный юным талантливым архитектором Воронихиным, был одобрен императором Александром I. Однако, возведение Казанского собора было завершено лишь 9 лет спустя и обошлось государственной казне почти в 5 миллионов рублей – баснословная сумма денег по тем временам. Любопытно, что в то время Казанский собор являлся для жителей Петербурга своеобразным памятником, символизирующим победу русского оружия в войне 1812 года. После революции 1917 года Казанский собор сильно пострадал от вандализма со стороны большевиков. Его интерьер был испорчен при передаче новой власти церковных ценностей. В 1932 году Казанский собор был закрыт, а само здание был отдано под музей атеизма.
