На основе данных молекулярно-генетического анализа бычок-кругляк Neogobius melanostomus и бычок-песочник Neogobius fluviatilis были объединены в самостоятельный род Apollonia, что отделило их от остальных видов бычковых рыб, оставленных в роде Neogobius (Neilson, Stepien, 2009). Учитывая генетическую близость двух видов, можно предположить, что и бычок-песочник является потенциальным объектом интродукции в другие регионы мира. Однако популяционная структура данного вида изучена достаточно слабо.

On the basis of data from molecular-genetic analysis of Neogobius melanostomus round goby and Goby Neogobius fluviatilis Sandpiper were consolidated into a separate genus Apollonia that separated them from the rest of the goby family fish species left in kind Neogobius (Neilson, Stepien, 2009).
