Петропавловскую крепость правильнее было бы называть Петропавловской тюрьмой. Ведь в военных действиях это фортификационное сооружение никогда не принимало, зато почти с самого своего основания активно использовалась, как политическая тюрьма. Правильнее даже сказать «главная политическая тюрьма» России, поскольку в казематах крепости содержали наиболее опасных государственных «политических» преступников. Кстати, одним из первых узников тюрьмы-крепости стал царевич Алексей, сын Петра I.
