В настоящее время численность ирбисов катастрофически мала. Незаконная, но финансово привлекательная охота за мехом снежного барса существенно сократила его популяцию. Во всех странах, на территории которых располагается ареал, снежный барс находится под охраной государства, но браконьерство ему по-прежнему угрожает. Снежный барс является редким, малочисленным, находящимся под угрозой исчезновения видом. Занесён в Красный список МСОП (2000) как «находящийся под угрозой исчезновения» (высшая охранная категория EN C2A). В Красной книге Монголии (1997) виду присвоен статус — «очень редкий», в Красной книге Российской Федерации (2001) — «находящийся под угрозой исчезновения вид на пределе ареала» (1 категория)[7][26]. Также снежный барс занесён в I Приложение Конвенции о международной торговле видами фауны и флоры, находящимися под угрозой исчезновения (СИТЕС). Стоит, однако, отметить, что все эти природоохранные акты и документы создают только правовую базу, которая реализуется на местах слабо, о чём свидетельствует повышение уровня браконьерства и контрабанды. В то же время отсутствуют программы, направленные на долгосрочное сохранение ирбиса[7].
