Индуистский эпос "Рамаяна" рассказывает, что в давние времена, когда праведный царевич Рама вместе со своей супругой Ситой и младшим братом Лакшманом покинули свое королевство Айодхью , они задержались в лесу, где с помощью волшебства и обмана красавица Сита была похищена коварным демоном Раваной, десятиглавым царем Ланки.
Царевич Рама вместе с братом отправились на поиски Ситы и чтобы ее спасти Рама должен был сразиться с демоном и его огромным войском.

Перед великим сражением Рама совершает священную пуджу призывая помощь богини Матери Дурги.
Дурга открывает ему секрет победы над злым демоном Раваной и Рама побеждает зло. Этот день победы называют Виджаядашми (विजयदशमी) или आयुध-पूजा оружие-молитва. Равана повержен. Сита освобождена.
