Современная медицина — это система научных знаний и практическая деятельность, направленные на сохранение и укрепление здоровья людей, предупреждение и лечение болезней.

Медицина изучает как механизмы биологических состояний (норма, патология), так и механизмы взаимодействия природных и социальных факторов с организменной и личностной подструктурами человека. Если норма и патология — это характеристика организменных состояний, то здоровье и болезнь человека — черты личностного состояния.

Норма (здоровье) и патология (болезнь) — основные объекты медицинского комплекса наук. Но медицина исследует не только эти основные объекты, а и ряд дополнительных связей этих объектов с факторами природной или социальной среды.

Определяя объект медицины, не следует сводить его к объекту общей патологии или к объекту клинической медицины.

Следует учитывать многообразные связи:
1.изучающие организацию медицинской помощи, проблемы профилактики;
2.изучающие болезни человека, их общие и специфические закономерности;
3.изучающие влияние различных веществ, энергий, информационных потоков на человека;
4.науки о методах исследования, лечения больного человека, о методах клинического прогнозирования;
5.прикладные медицинские науки (судебная, авиационная, космическая, спортивная, военная медицина).

Предметом исследования современной медицины как науки являются причины возникновения, закономерности развития болезней человека, методы их распознавания и лечения, методы предупреждения заболеваний, формы оптимальной организации медицинской помощи населению.

Построение теоретической медицины будет в значительной степени связано с многоуровневой трактовкой ее объекта, существенные характеристики которого принадлежат не только организму, но и ряду надорганизменных уровней. Выяснение подвижных граней между нормой и патологией возможно при учете «включенности» организма в популяции с их специфическими закономерностями.
