Сегодня Кемеровский государственный университет — один из крупнейших классических университетов Сибири. Университет имеет 5 филиалов в городах Кемеровской области, 13 факультетов, 70 кафедр. Обучается более 22 тысяч студентов по очной, вечерней, заочной и дистанционной формам обучения.

В университете действует 7 диссертационных советов по защите кандидатских и докторских диссертаций, принимающих к защите работы по 15 научным специальностям.[3]

С 1997 года университет является одной из учебных баз реализации Президентской программы подготовки управленческих кадров для организаций народного хозяйства Российской Федерации.[4]

С 2008 года на базе университета проводится Весенняя и Летняя естественно-математические и гуманитарные школы для одарённых учащихся Кузбасса[5][6].

В 2009 году Кемеровский государственный университет прошёл конкурс на участие в программе компании Hewlett-Packard «Университетский кластер». В рамках программы в университете установлен высокопроизводительный вычислительный кластер производительностью около 0,3 терафлоп.[7][8]

В 2012 году университет вошёл в число победителей федерального конкурса на поддержку программ развития студенческих объединений. По данным университета, в представленную КемГУ программу вошли 62 проекта, направленные на повышение профессиональных компетенций студентов, вовлечение их в процессы управления вузом, а также на развитие университетской социокультурной среды, которая способствует творческому самовыражению и самореализации обучающихся
