Айерс рок впечатляет не только своими размерами. У этой скалы есть удивительное свойство хамелеона: она меняет свой цвет в течение дня. Так ее можно увидеть в черном и голубом цветах, во всех оттенках красного (от розового до пурпурного) и золотистого. Объясняют это строением скалы: красный песчанник содержит в себе оксиды железа.

Поверхность скалы изрезана бороздками и трещинами, похожими на следы вмятинами. Есть немало больших и маленьких пещер, причем некоторые достигают 800 м в длину и до 30 м в высоту. Ну а основание скалы, а также стены пещер покрыты уже рукотворными рисунками аборигенов.
