Более глубокому исследованию лексической синонимии способствовало распространение концепции языка Фердинанде де Соссюра (швейцарский лингвист, заложивший основы семиологии и структурной лингвистики) и развитие структурной лингвистики в 20 веке.
Большой вклад в проведение исследования, посвященном анализу семантических и функциональных связей и слов и их синонимии в современном английском языке внес наш соотечественник В.Г. Вилюман (советский ученый - признанный специалист в области синонимии английского языка).
