Хирург-ортопед, одним из основных достижений которого является изобретение в 1951 году универсального аппарата внешней фиксации для лечения переломов и деформаций костей, которым и сегодня широко пользуются во всем мире.
Также Илизаров является основателем Центра восстановительной травматологии и ортопедии, который носит его имя. Илизаров является автором более чем 600 научных медицинских работ, автором 194 изобретений.
