Переводить Толкина на русский язык непросто. Как справедливо пишет известный исследователь творчества Толкина, филолог Н. Семенова1, "Властелин Колец" – главная из книг Толкина, опубликованных при его жизни – полон всевозможных языковых и литературных аллюзий, причем почерпнутых в основном не из современных, а из древних европейских языков и литератур, полное понимание которых доступно, как правило, лишь хорошо подготовленному филологу и лингвисту. Необходимо также помнить, что, по сути, Толкин всю свою жизнь писал как бы одну книгу, действие которой разворачивается на протяжении примерно десяти тысяч лет; читателю же представляются лишь отрывки из этой огромной и неоконченной работы, однако едва ли будет преувеличением сказать, что за каждым описанным в книгах Толкина – особенно во "Властелине Колец" – событием стоит мифология, выходящая за рамки данной книги.
