The first modern atomic theory proposed by John Dalton. It is assumed that each chemical element consists of atoms, identical in size and weight. These particles were assumed to be indivisible and unchanged during a chemical reaction. Dalton attributed atoms of elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur, particularly regarding weight (more accurately, the mass), and also gave specific to each element symbol.
However, in the late 19th century, it was made a number of discoveries, which showed that the atom is not an indivisible particle. The first of these findings, based on a study of the rays, ispusaaemyh negatively charged electrodes. The existence of these cathode rays was demonstrated in the 70-ies of the 19th century in a number of experiments that Crookes performed.
In 1885, Wilhelm discovered X-rays, which were subsequently named X-rays
