Сюжет романа стоится на истории американского лейтенанта Фридриха Генри. Он служит в итальянских медицинских войсках, во время первой мировой войны.
Роман разделен на 5 частей. Каждая из них описывает определенный период жизни Генри.
Он влюбляется в Катерину Бернли, которая добровольно ушла на фронт из Великобритании и была медсестрой. Фридрих тяжело ранен. Катерина ухаживает за ним в госпитале. После госпиталя он возвращается на фронт. А его войска отступает. Он дезертирует во время массового отступа. забирает девушку, которую он любит, и они сбегают в Швейцарию на маленькой лодке через озеро. Идиллия заканчивается тогда, когда Катерина умирает при родах.
