Some of Britain's new directory enquiry services may be accused of overcharging but obviously only in Italy are there operations who will openly admit to being a bunch of criminals. A major Italian telephone company confirmed last week that callers to directory inquiries may find themselves talking to murderes and armed robbers. Under a trial, an experimenttal scheme believed to be the first of its kind in Europe, prisoners at the San Vittore jail in Malan are being paid up to 7000 a month to man a specially designed call centre in a prison wing.In seven-hour shifts the prisoners give not only telephone numbers but also the share prices of cinema and theatre listings and advice on reataurants-the food not the time of night the amount of momey you earn from selling goods or sevices are counted. Callers are not told that the people on the other end of the line are in jail nor are the operators allowed to divulge this. A new frointier has opened in prison labour, said Luigi Pagano, the director of San Vittore. If reflected prison philosophy that inmates should not regard the captivity as an excuse to remain inert be he added. Thirty prisoners have been recruited to the scheme which starded last month. They are a core rigours of the three-week training course. This incuded learning how to deal with the public, perhaps in a less confortational style than hitherto. The participants include murderers armed robbers and drug dealers. Mafiose and child abusers however are call barred. Marco Tronchettie Provers chairman of a major Italian telephone company said the inmates contracts were identical to those of 2,000 other operators at 73 conventional call centres around the country. The poit, is that this is a real jon he said. Prisoners have welcomed the project which helps gives them contact with the outside world. This is an unprecedented opportunity for us said an inmate named only as Massimo 25 who is serving four years for arms and drug offences. We get the feeling of doing the same job as people on the outside. Telecom Italia is hoping to extend its startling recruiment policy to other jails in the future.
