ENGLISH MEALS
The usual meals are breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner (sup¬per).The English are very particular about their meals and, strictly keep to their meal times. Breakfast is from any time until 9 o’clock, lunch is between 12 and 2 p. m., tea at 4 o’clock and dinner between 7 and 9 p. m.
Breakfast is generally a bigger meal than people have on the Continent, though some English people like a ‘’con¬tinental” breakfast of rolls and butter and coffee. But the usual English breakfast is porridge or corn flakes with milk or cream and sugar, bacon and eggs, marmalade (made of oranges) with buttered toast, and tea or coffee. (The English people like tea very strong and they usually have milk in it). For a change one can have a boiled egg, cold ham, or perhaps fish.
The English people generally have lunch about 1 o’clock. For lunch they have cold meat, potatoes, salad and pickles, with a pudding or fruit to follow. Sometimes they have a mutton chop, or steak and chips, followed by biscuits and cheese, and some people like a glass of light beer with lunch.
Afternoon tea one can hardly call a meal.
In some houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day. Eng¬lishmen begin with soup, followed by fish, roast chicken, potatoes and vegetables, sweets, fruit and nuts. (English, soup differs greatly from Russian soup. You will not find vegetables or meat in onion or mushroom soup).
