С историей Первого МГМУ теснейшим образом связана история медицинского образования, медицинской науки и здравоохранения России. Первый МГМУ является колыбелью большинства отечественных медицинских школ, научных медицинских обществ; в её стенах зарождались первые медицинские журналы, созданы лучшие учебники и руководства.

Родоначальником Первого МГМУ был медицинский факультет Императорского Московского университета, открытого в 1755 году по предложению великого русского ученого М. В. Ломоносова и графа И. И. Шувалова в период правления императрицы Елизаветы Петровны. Занятия на медицинском факультете начались в 1758 году.
